How to Pack your Home

Ah, home sweet home…where we live, experience, collect and store way more than we really should. So, come moving time you are faced with the tough decision of packing your memories into a box and continuing life in a new place.

The first task to do is probably the saddest. We need to get through mounds of stuff we have collected during the years and decide on what goes and what stays. This decluttering process needs to happen from your closet right through to your garage.

If you are hiring a mover to pack for you, then this is a good time to call them in. If you are self-packing, then now is the time to get your packing materials in order.

Starting your home in a new location is not easy during the first week or so. For the first few weeks you are liable to find yourself living out of boxes so it’s always a good thing to have your essentials in an easily accessible place. Pack your clothes, toiletries and other essentials in a suit case or in a box that is clearly marked. This way you know what to unpack for the first night in your new home. Get this done and put these boxes aside. That way, you won’t forget anything at the last minute.

Next, go ahead and pack the rest of the house up. It’s always a good thing to pack room by room. This way you can label your boxes in an orderly manner and when you start unpacking, you can place the specific box in the specific room. It makes things all the more easier.

Packing furniture and carpets at the end is always a good idea. You want to get all the cupboards cleared up and the dressers emptied out before wrapping them or securing them for the move. Get the smaller things out of the way and then attend to the bigger and more bulky items.

Now, packing a box or suitcase with your essentials for the first night or first few days at your new home is great but it’s not that great if the box or suit case is put in some obscure place. So, pack your essentials first and put them into the truck the last so that this package is visible and easily accessible. Good Luck with your move!
